London sleuths Miss Scarlet and the Duke tackle more capital crimes
Work pressures mean relations between Miss Eliza Scarlet and William ‘Duke’ Wellington are strained as we rejoin the private detective and policeman for a fourth, six-part series of the crime drama.
New challenge
Eliza (Kate Phillips) is running the rival Nash & Sons London detective agency where, despite some setbacks, she’s relishing it.
‘Working at Nash & Sons allows Eliza to meet lots of new people, and the more she meets the more opportunities and avenues of investigation there are!’ reveals Peaky Blinders actor Kate, 34. ‘But she starts off at odds with the accountant Clarence.’
Doctors actor Paul Bazely, who plays Clarence, agrees that the two get off on the wrong foot as, following a mass walkout in protest at a woman running the business, Eliza employs actors to masquerade as employees and make the place look busy! ‘Clarence doesn’t approve of the way Miss Scarlet is running the office,’ he says. ‘And he has an annoying habit of unfavourably comparing her to Mr Nash!’ Meanwhile, with William (Stuart Martin) under the cosh in his police work, he invites Eliza to assist him in the investigation into a shooting and robbery at a high-end brothel. Could this bring them closer together, or will work, as ever, get in the way of romance?
‘Eliza and William’s relationship is so complex!’ says Kate. ‘There’s no doubt she loves him, but she’s a woman in a particular world, and sometimes the needs of the individual get washed aside when there’s a bigger picture. Where they go from here, I don’t know – but I’ll be excited to find out!’
