David Tennant celebrates a wonderful year for cinema at the star-packed BAFTAS…

-

Q How are you feeling about hosting this year’s BAFTA Film Awards?

A I’m not particularly anxious. I just feel it’s going to be a lark. Apart from anything else they have an autocue, so I don’t have to learn it. That tends to be the greatest fear, that you’re going to step out in front of an audience and not know what happens next.

Q What do you enjoy most about award shows?

A They’re great fun, especially if you’ve seen the films and you’ve got firm opinions about what’s good and what’s bad. You can enjoy celebrating the winners and screaming at the telly for the ones you disagree with!

It’s been a great year for films, with

Q Oppenheimer, Saltburn, Poor Things, Barbie,

Wonka and Killers of the Flower Moon all bagging nominations. Do you think cinema has captured the public’s imagination again?

A This feels like the year that cinema bounced back and shrugged off the spectre of COVID-19. It’s nice to see it thriving again!

Q What films have you enjoyed recently?

A If the right film comes along we have an entire family outing! We did that with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider

Man: Across the Spider-verse and Wonka!

QDo you have any advice for winners accepting an award? A Speaking from one’s own experience – and I’ve never accepted a BAFTA

– it’s good to be prepared. Even if you’re 99.99% certain it’s going to whoever won the last 10 awards, have a couple of sentences in your back pocket!

Q There’ll be big names from the big screen everywhere… Are there any you’re particularly looking forward to meeting?

A Where I get really star-struck is with people that relate back to my childhood. I’ve worked with actors such as Dame

Judi Dench, Sir Ian Mckellen and Sir Derek Jacobi. Mercifully they’ve all turned out to be delightful!
