As Caroline Byrne takes over as artistic director at Shakespeare’s Globe – the first woman to do so – the first play she is staging is TheTamingoftheShrew (from 13 May). The story follows two sisters: the beautiful Bianca, who’s keen to marry, and her rebellious sister Katharina, who clings to her independence. Their father insists Katharina must marry first, so Bianca’s admirers persuade Petruchio to propose to her. But can Katharina be tamed? Now is an apt time to visit the Globe as this year is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
