Why was this group

photo taken? bit.ly/ 2dK8wOH I found this photo among my parents’ pictures. The reverse states: “Photo: E Simmons, Herne Bay.” I am intrigued by the two women seated in white in the centre as they stand out so much. The man seated in the middle on the left seems to have a sergeant’s badge on his arm, the man next to him has a thin striped armband. Some have what looks like a flower in their lapel, some a badge or button on a ribbon. Can anyone offer ideas as to who this group of people might be, what they did, where the picture may have been taken and approximate date? Lettice99

Eva Hart, born 1848,

Manchester bit.ly/ 2nrJAEZ My great great grandfather Reuben Bromwich, b1832 Warwick, married for a second time in 1875 to an Eva Hart. (St Martin in the Fields). On the marriage certificate, she gives her father’s name as John Hart, bootmaker. In 1871, she is living in Camberwell (married?) with a daughter Maud Hart (born 1869).

I have a copy of a proof of age letter giving Maud’s birth as 1865. On the birth certificates of two of her sons, she reveals that her name is Eva Bromwich, formerly Wilson.

I have been unable to find Eva before 1871 or after 1891. kobie

Tasks in slipper

factory bit.ly/ 2n3c9qY I’m researching my family history and have two people working at a slipper factory at Rawtenstall, Lancashire, in 1939 (from the 1939 register). One was a ‘bottom scourer’ and the other a ‘bottom painter’. What did these tasks involve? Sue Harris

William Wigley

Smith bit.ly/ 2m5fNkZ I have two bibles: one is inscribed “William Wigley Smith the gift of his Grandma Mary Ann Smith” and the other “William Wigley Smith the gift of his Grandma Smith 1 March 1852”.

They were with our late aunt’s things, but I have no idea why she had them or what William’s connection is to our family.

I have found a marriage for William to Elizabeth Long Bray and nine children. I have found marriages for some, one of which was to a Cannon. Our aunt’s married name was Canning although there is family talk that it may have changed from Cannon and her husband was Irish. Her maiden name was Goodchild and the family originated from Kingston on Thames.

Can anyone help? haryc

Robert John

Robertson bit.ly/ 2mN3cQr I found some letters written to my great aunt, Annie Ballingall of Leven, Fife, from a Robert J Robertson born on 6 May 1897. He remains elusive. I know he fought in the First World War and in the Chanak Crisis, but no one has found any details of his service. He suffered a bout of malaria so that might give a clue to his theatre of war.

When their love was finally doomed, he left for the Congo before going to Hopetown and Sea Lake in Victoria, Australia. They exchanged letters, but she died a spinster in 1969. He was a bit of a scallywag according to his letters, but beyond that I have nothing! AlMeek55
