3 National Library of Scotland’s Digital Gallery digital.nls.uk/ gallery
The National Library has done a great job of digitising and opening up its holdings for researchers. The online map section alone is a hugely valuable resource, but there’s also lots of material relating to photos and photographers available via the Digital Gallery. Galleries include sporting photos and engravings and descriptions in Scotia Depicta. The highlight is probably the haunting plates within the Thomas Annan’s Glasgow gallery – images of the city taken in the 1860s. The NLS also has some 2,300 photographs available to browse on Flickr ( flickr.com/photos/ nlscotland).
