4Warwickshire Photographic Survey
The Library of Birmingham’s Collections website includes all sorts of material, such as the R Crompton Rhodes Collection of Fashion Plates (1771-1901), the city’s portrait collection, plus the vast Warwickshire Photographic Survey. The latter was founded in 1890 by local photographers William Jerome Harrison and John Benjamin Stone. As the website notes, it set out to “create a photographic record of the urban and rural landscape of Warwickshire, which was undergoing rapid transformation as a result of the Agrarian and Industrial Revolutions”. Explore the results through geographically arranged galleries, or there’s the strangely hypnotic ‘deep zoom’ image mosaic at damsdeepzoom.shoothill.com.
