10 Were your ancestors trying to hide?
Finally, you may have to accept that some people didn’t want to be found, and may not have told the truth. One of my toughest brick walls has been trying to find my husband’s great grandparents. The more I look, the more certain I am that they were lying on the only document I have of their existence: their son’s birth certificate. My husband’s grandfather was given up for informal adoption, and trying to track down his birth parents has stumped me. It is one of my favourite brick walls, but for now I’m leaving it alone. I will come back to it in a year or so and see if new datasets, fresh eyes or greater experience will help me reach the truth. And one day, maybe, the thrill of victory will have me shouting from the rooftops, and I’ll remember why I love family history, and my brick walls in particular.
