Robert ‘Judge’ Rinder
Successful barrister Robert ‘Judge’ Rinder gets his nickname from ITV’s reality courtroom series Judge Rinder. He’s nifty on his feet too, coming fifth in the 2016 series of Strictly Come Dancing. He started out wanting to be an actor, and Benedict Cumberbatch is a close friend.
Robert hails from a large Jewish family and regards his maternal grandmother, Lottie, as its “quiet centre”. If only the family’s history were so quiet. But it’s a story over which the Holocaust and, earlier, revolution looms large.
Beginning with the life of his grandfather, who endured time in Nazi concentration camps, Robert learns about the fate of his relatives. Happily, though, this is also a story of survival. THEMES: the Holocaust, Jewish records, mental illness, the Second World War
