Amateur snapshot dated 1946
Our beaches closed to the public during the war. Families, including my London relatives (this is my mother, aged 15), flocked to the coast the following summer.
Time to play
New styles of postwar beachwear included garments like this cotton print playsuit, an all-in-one halter-necked bodice and shorts.
Snapshots often show interesting features that can be researched further. For example, Devon’s Museum of British Surfing identified this ‘surf rider board’, a body board from the early 20th century.
