How to search Gibraltar’s National Archives online, like Michelle Keegan

Our Girl star Michelle Keegan knew that she had roots in Gibraltar, and the territory’s National Archives helped us to trace her family. Many of the archives’ genealogical records are free to search online at nationalarchives.gi.

1Navigate to the website’s homepage, click the ‘Inhabitants’ tab on the menu bar then click ‘Civil Records’ to see the page shown here. Choose a year or date range then ‘Surname’. We chose 1911 to search for Michelle’s maternal great grandmother, Leonor Orfila, in the 1911 census.

2The next page displays all of the surnames that are listed for the 1911 census. Scroll down until you find the surname you are researching, Orfila in this example, then release the mouse button to choose that name.

3A list of everyone with the surname Orfila for that year is displayed at the foot of the screen over three pages. Click through each page to find your ancestor. The entry for Leonor is on the second page along with the rest of her family (they all lived at the same address, Carreras Passage).
