TNA conference celebrates FreeBMD’s 20th anniversary
Non-profit family history website freebmd.org.uk celebrated its 20th anniversary at a conference at The National Archives in Kew on 15 September.
The website was founded in 1998, and is now part of charitable incorporated organisation Free UK Genealogy. For 20 years, FreeBMD has brought together volunteers to transcribe the civil registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales and put it online for free.
The anniversary conference featured four talks, and the speakers included FreeBMD’s co-founder Graham Hart. Approximately 75 people attended, many of whom were FreeBMD volunteers.
Denise Colbert, Free UK Genealogy engagement co-ordinator, said that the day was “very much people coming together to celebrate a project that they feel strongly about and have given lots and lots of their time to”.
