1 Visit livesoft­he­first­world­ and type the sur­name and ser­vice num­ber of the rel­a­tive you have re­searched – if you just en­ter the sur­name, you may get too many re­sults. En­tries has been cre­ated for com­bat­ants us­ing Medal In­dex Cards.

2 You may find that some­one has al­ready typed in in­for­ma­tion for your sol­dier – if so, click on his name and see if you can add any­thing. Oth­er­wise you will be asked to sup­ply his birth and death de­tails if known. You will need to at­tach ev­i­dence.

3 Click ‘Add to Life Story’. Sub­scribers (it costs £6 a month) can search for and at­tach records di­rect from the site. You can up­load images too; you can’t up­load records from other sub­scrip­tion sites, but you can add a web link to the source.
