Armistice Diary
Following the letters in the November and December issues about First World War diaries, I thought I would share something from my grandfather’s diary. Frank Jowitt Dick was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery with 223 Siege Battery. In November 1918 he was at Ingoyghem, west of Brussels. His diary entry for Sunday 10 November simply
reads: “Peace news rec’d. 20.40.” He wrote something for every day of 1918, so it is possible to follow his movements all year. My favourite entry is for 26 December when Frank wrote, “Bath, Dusseldorf.” What a luxury that must have seemed! He never talked about his experiences in the war because he was so upset by what happened to the horses. Vicky Tomlinson
