Reclaim the Records publishes New York State Marriage Index
American non-profit group Reclaim the Records has published the 1881–1965 New York State Marriage Index online.
The group, which uses Freedom of Information (FOI) laws to obtain important family history records, gained the index through an FOI request to the New York State Department of Health.
It has now published images of the index on the Internet Archive at bit.ly/nymarriages. The records list the names of brides and grooms, and the dates and places of marriage. They also include an identification number that can be used to request a copy of the original marriage licence or certificate for a fee. Marriage licences are considered open to the public after 50 years.
However, the records exclude New York City, as well as Albany, Buffalo and Yonkers before 1914/1915.
