Asylum Inmate’s Windfall
The Cumberland & Westmorland Herald reported an unusual discovery at a cottage in Kirkby Stephen. The cottage was formerly occupied by a woman named Mary Hopper, who had been admitted to Garlands Asylum nine years ago. Her maintenance fees were paid out of her savings, but the money had run out. When the cottage was searched, “£100 was found secreted and a large assortment of valuable silk, table linen, etc” – enough to cover the fees.
