Manchester gets Emmeline Pankhurst statue
Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst is now commemorated in the city of her birth after a statue was unveiled in St Peter’s Square, Manchester. The ceremony took place on 14 December 2018, the 100th anniversary of the first election in Britain in which women could vote. Pankhurst was chosen by a public vote from a list of 20 historic Manchester women. At the event Emmeline’s great granddaughter Helen Pankhurst commented that the statue showed Emmeline beckoning campaigners on “because despite all the progress in women’s lives, there is still work to be done”.
