Railway Work, Life and Death
Reveal the hidden stories of Edwardian railway workers Project Overview Researchers from the University of Portsmouth, the Modern Records Centre and the National Railway Museum are asking readers to transcribe a book of railway worker accidents spanning 1901–1907. It is hoped that the entire volume will be completed on Transcription Tuesday.
How Will It Help?
The book, which was created by the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, provides a fascinating insight into Britain’s industrial heritage and worker safety. The transcribed entries will be added to a searchable database.
How Do I Take Part?
Shortly before Transcription Tuesday, the project team will post the address of a publicly available Google Sheet at railwayaccidents.port.ac.uk. The sheet – which can be edited by multiple people at once – will contain links to scans of the register pages, along with cells in which users can input data.
