Tracing Your Northern Ancestors: The North East & Cumbria for Family Historians Saturday, 2 February 10:30-13:00 (£20.00) Does your family history seem to be leading you to the far north of England? You are not alone. The stories and history of the northern counties are key areas for many people. Seeking to trace their ancestry back through generations, researchers often find the trail takes them north, sometimes right through it.

Keith Gregson gives a fascinating insight into the world in which our ancestors lived. He begins by giving us an overview of the history and heritage of the region - of Northumberland, Tyneside, Durham, Wearside, Tees Valley and Cumbria. He will then help you find a variety of records that are available for your family tree research.

A half-day course with Keith Gregson. Getting the Best Use of Online Catalogues Saturday, 2 February 14:00-17:00 (£20.00) Simon Fowler is a professional researcher, who wants to help you be better at getting information, finding those notes from others but not relying on them. Simon is an expert at this. He spends many hours each day trying to make sense of online catalogues - easy to use but bizarrely organised - and the dreaded CALM software used by local record offices.

In this practical workshop, Simon Fowler wants to help you effectively use search engines and online catalogues as you search for records to help you with your family history. During the afternoon he offers tricks and short cuts to help you find your ancestors, if not exactly in doublequick time, then a little more efficiently.

The workshop includes practical exercises and research assignments, so please bring your laptop or tablet. This workshop is not suitable for anyone who is not confident using the web.
