Agricultural reformer Jethro Tull published The New Horse-Hoeing Husbandry this year, a book destined to become a classic. Tull had already invented a drill that was pulled behind a horse to plant seeds at the right depth and spacing. His new guide to getting the best out of the soil relied on techniques he had pioneered at his own farm at Shalbourne, in Berkshire.
