The ‘Gin Act’ passed

The Government tried desperate measures to stop the flow of gin, which was leading to high levels of drunkenness and social irresponsibility. The 1735 Spirit Duties Act taxed sales and imposed a system of licences.

In fact, only two licences were ever taken out – people just took to producing low-quality illicit gin. Consumption began to rise, despite the danger of poisoning.
