The new year brings new scenes from life in Poplar in the eighth series of the hit drama, which follows on from the special that aired on Christmas Day. The overarching story picks up in the spring of 1964 where community-minded Violet is holding a teddy bears’ picnic, and trying to raise funds via a sweepstake on whether the Queen will have a boy or a girl. Plus Trixie returns to work after a battle with alcoholism, following actor Helen George’s time off from the programme to have a real-life daughter.
