Gill Hulse from Dorset shares some beloved family photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries

A portrait of courage

The armoured cruiser HMS Good Hope was sunk with the loss of all hands at the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile on 1 November 1914. This photograph of the ship’s officers was taken two weeks before the tragedy. My grandfather John Ellery Tizard is in the centre of the back row smoking a pipe.

Esther

This is my great grandmother Esther Meadows (née Norman). She was born in Bradninch in Devon in 1848 to a family of papermakers.

My great grandfather

Henry Samuel Meadows was the director of Watkins Tugs, which was based on the River Thames and ran ocean-going tugs.

Time for tea

My grandma Gertrude came to live with us in the 1970s.

Welsh holiday

John Ellery is seen here as a boy in Bridgend, in around 1884.

Teenage recruit

John Ellery joined the Royal Navy when he was only 18 years old.

A fine memorial

John Ellery’s next of kin received this scroll after the war ended.

A portrait with flowers

I love this photograph of my great grandmother Esther when she was a young woman – especially the elaborate hat.

Canine companions

Here is another photo of John Ellery, again smoking a pipe, with some of the crew of the HMS Good Hope, and a quartet of four-legged friends.

Edwardian wedding

My grandmother, Gertrude Mary Tyler or ‘Gertie’, worked as a milliner. My grandparents got married on 2 June 1909 at All Saints Church in Carshalton, Surrey. Here they are on their wedding day.
