Sarah Dewbury bit.ly/sarah-dewbury

Agnes Grant was born in Manchester in 1856; her birth certificate shows her parents as Hugh Grant and Sarah Grant, formerly Dupree (no marriage found). On other family documents, Sarah’s surname is also spelled Duprey or Dubery.

However, on Agnes’ RC baptism certificate, the father is Hugh Grant, while her mother is named not as Sarah, but as Alice Grant née Dewbury. The 1861 Altrincham census shows that Agnes’ mother Sarah was born in ‘Wasdon’, Buckinghamshire, c1826.

There was an Alice Dewbury born in Waddesdon, Bucks, c1827. She was orphaned in infancy, and on the 1841 census for Waddesdon, was a female servant in the Dennis household, but I can’t find her after 1841.

When Sarah gave ‘Alice’ as her name to the priest at Agnes’ baptism, was it because ‘Sarah’ wasn’t the name she was born with? And she says she was born in ‘Wasdon’, which Bucks FHS says is the ‘local’ pronunciation of Waddesdon. Is this place of birth just coincidence? Or could Alice and Sarah be the same person? sdup26

Surname mysteries bit.ly/surname-myst

Hello. I’m trying to trace two of my ancestors: Martha Gallimon born about 1723 in Oxfordshire, who married William Brookes in Bampton in 1748, and Susan Swackley born in the 1720s or 1730s, based on her marriage in 1754 in Ambrosden, Oxfordshire. I can’t find instances of either surname anywhere to suggest where they might have come from. Any ideas of how to go about finding either family? Will Mundy

George Gettliffe bit.ly/gettliffe

George Gettliffe was a tailor who lived in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. I know that he married Henrietta Douglas by special licence on 30 April 1814 at All Saints, Derby. He swears that he is 21 or over. Henrietta, who was born in 1792, is wrongly said to be 20 and a minor. I also know that he died on 8 May 1845 at Compton and Clifton, Derbyshire. According to his death certificate, he was aged 50 when he died, suggesting he was born in 1795. In the 1841 census, both George and Henrietta have their ages rounded to 45. George is born in Derbyshire, while Henrietta is correctly listed as born out of county. I would really like some help with finding a baptism record for George.
