Serving brothers bit.ly/meek-four-bros

Was there a particular protocol that was followed if brothers all served in the Second World War? For instance, would they be allowed to serve in the same regiment, the same unit or in the same place?

I have a group of four brothers from Devon who all served in the war. I don’t know which regiments three of them served in or where they joined up, but I suspect the West Country as they all lived in Devon before and after. The other one moved to and joined up in London and became a PTI, and he served in London and Aldershot. All four survived. meekhcs

Married in a ‘Licensed Room’ bit.ly/licensed-room

I have some relatives who, although banns were read, were “Married in the Licensed Room according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after banns...” in 1845 in Buckfastleigh, Devon. Does anyone know what this ‘Licensed Room’ would have been – and why they would have been married there when there was a church in Buckfastleigh?

Is this the same man? bit.ly/lwswfc-same

Just wondered if anyone could lend me their expertise and insight into whether they also think the man in the works photo

(pictured) is the same as the one in the second (or at least similar).

The image of the two men was taken at a steelworks in my home town of Sheffield, UK. The man on the left is Arthur

John Waddingham, and I reckon the one on the right could be my great grandfather Richard Waddingham, but cannot corroborate this.

However, we were left an image of an old man by my grandad’s family, and recently I’ve noticed a similarity between the two. All I’m certain of is that there are no other candidates for who the man in the second photo can be, as both my great grandfather’s father and other brother died when they were in their 30s. lwswfc

George Albert Holmes bit.ly/george-albert

Does anybody have this man in their family tree? Born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, in 1892 to George Holmes and Jane née Massey. He appears in both the 1901 and 1911 census at 9 Michael Street, Whitehaven, listed under his second name Albert. In 1913 he married Sarah Ann Telford in Houghton-leSpring, County Durham. Sarah and George had seven children. Shortly after their last child was born in 1928 George did a flit, and if family stories are correct took the entire contents of the house with him.

My suspicion is that he took up with or made a bigamous marriage with another woman and may have a second family. laughing granny

Missing relative bit.ly/missing-may

I am trying to trace my 2x great aunt May Eliza Bates, born 18 May 1902 in Smallburgh, Norfolk. I have her birth record and I have located her in the 1911 census, but nothing at all after.... it’s like she has just vanished.

Her parents were Audrey Slaughter (1875 Walsingham, Norfolk) and John Bates (1865 Norfolk). She had a brother and a sister. Her sister Daisy Maud Bates left for Australia in 1929 on her own and never returned to the UK. I have all the information on all her family and all the information on her sister. However, there are no leads on May. There are no records that I can find to say she left the country, married over here or died. Any help or advice would be appreciated so much. kelly85
