Mabbott brick wall bit.ly/mabbott-wall
My 3x great grandmother was Sarah Mabbott. Her place of birth is listed as Boston, Lincolnshire, on the ’51, ’61 and ’71 census. Her date of birth is listed consistently on all three censuses as 1830/31. I have never found a baptism record for her or for any siblings in the area.
I have found a Sarah Mabbott in the Boston workhouse on the ’41 census of approximately the right date of birth (1829). Unfortunately there are no other members of the family listed within the workhouse or anywhere else in the area.
Sarah was a servant in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, on the 1851 census. She is listed in the same household as her future husband Thomas Emery, who she married on 22 May 1851 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Her father is listed on the marriage certificate as John Mabbott, and his occupation was draper.
Sarah and Thomas were in Sheffield for the ’61 census and eventually settled in Doncaster (’71 census and both buried there).
Does anyone have any ideas how I can find her parents so I can start unpicking the extended family? annfaml
Liverpool riots bit.ly/liverpool-riots
My grandfather Fred Lowe attested in July 1908 into the 18th Hussars. He was stationed at Delhi Barracks, Tidworth, Hampshire, for the 1911 census and stationed in 1912 at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for his marriage to Annie Stellings.
In 1911 there was a transport workers’ strike which led to serious disturbances in Liverpool. On 15 August rioters attacked prison vans being escorted by a unit of the 18th Hussars; two were shot dead and three wounded. I know where grandad was in April 1911 and also October 1912, but was he a part of the unit which fired upon the rioters? I’ve tried the regimental museum but drew a blank. midshipman
Clack mystery help bit.ly/clack-mystery
I have two Clack families in my tree. One is that of my 6x great grandmother Ann Clack who was born in 1772 in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. Her parents were Samuel Clack and Sarah Pearse Miles. Samuel died in 1813 in Brize Norton. Samuel and Sarah had five children between 1772 and 1788 in Brize Norton. I’m trying to trace Samuel’s origins, but haven’t managed it yet.
The other Clack connection is my 7x great grandmother Rachel Clack. She married in 1750 in Bampton, Oxfordshire, to William
Atkins. They had five children between 1752 and 1764 in Brize Norton. I can’t believe that Rachel and Samuel aren’t related in some way, but I can’t seem to find how. Any ideas on where I should go from here?

Black history bit.ly/redcarp-black
I recall seeing or hearing somewhere that a group was requesting any info regarding people of colour in parish records etc. I recently came across a reference to “a Robert, a black man owned by —” (sorry, don’t have the notebook to hand) in the baptisms of an Oxon parish register. Does anyone know what the organisation was, and how I can contact it? I find the notion that so many former slaves were absorbed into the indigenous UK population fascinating. RedCarp
Absent Voters Lists bit.ly/avl-helen
We have just found my great grandfather at the back of the 1918 district electoral register as an absent voter. He had “NM” at the side of his name. Would he be registered anywhere else, such as in an army base? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mystery marriage bit.ly/langarth-marriage
Can anyone help as to why a bride has two different surnames for the same marriage please. The groom is the same, place and date exactly the same, but there are two entries with the same reference number for both surnames. One is her maiden name, but I do not know the other one at all. Thank you. Langarth15
