NLS mapping site adds Sutherland estate maps

The National Library of Scotland has added a set of 580 maps from the estates of the Duke of Sutherland to its maps viewer, maps.nls.uk. The collection contains 524 estate maps, 40 county maps and 22 coastal charts. They provide a detailed snapshot of the rural landscape of northern Scotland from the 1770s to the 1920s, including the sale of land, the creation of crofting lands and the expansion of shooting forests.
