Who Do You Think You Are?

Our DNA is a key

We can’t change the genes we inherit from our families, but we can pass on a legacy that will help future generations unlock longer lives

-

Many family historians have taken DNA tests to try and connect with family, but the story that our genes tell is not just about the past. Cancer Research UK funds vital research looking at how to combat genes we inherit that may increase our risk of cancer in the future.

One in every two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime. Although most cancers are caused by gene faults that develop during someone’s lifetime, some gene faults can be inherited.

There are tests available for some of these gene faults for people who have a strong family history of cancer. But there are still mutations yet to be discovered and which have no test available. Cancer Research UK is helping scientists uncover more ways our genes may predispose us to cancer, and its researchers will do all they can to continue to make the breakthroughs that will one day beat cancer.

Over the past year, COVID-19 has hit Cancer Research UK hard. Fundraising has fallen and, right now, future research is at risk. Gifts in Wills help secure future income for the charity, and in turn, mean research can continue to save lives for generations to come. Cancer Research UK is determined to continue funding research that will make treatments kinder, less disruptive and, ultimately, save lives.

The charity’s pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives. Over the past 40 years survival has doubled, but the charity is committed to accelerating progress and seeing three in four people surviving cancer for ten years or more by 2034.

Cancer Research UK is asking its supporters to help future generations by leaving a gift in their Will to Cancer Research UK. In return, its researchers will do all they can to continue to make the breakthroughs that will one day beat cancer.

These gifts will help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
