The small communities of the Outer Hebrides have passed down a lot of material of interest to family historians via oral history. Individuals, such as Celtic scholar Rev William Matheson, have recorded what they could. His writings can be viewed at the NLS.

The NRS holds many records relating to the Outer Hebrides. William came across a letter in a miscellaneous collection than took one family branch back a further generation.
