Findmypast’s vast ‘British Army Service Records’ collection includes more than eight million documents from 1760–1939, spread across 17 record sets. This includes the half-a-million strong ‘Militia Service Records 1806–1915’ drawn from The National Archives’ series WO96, comprising militia attestation forms completed when a man was recruited; note that transcripts, but not images, of the militia service records are also available via familysearch.org. The form includes marital status, occupation, details related to any previous service, residence and next of kin, in addition to results of medical examinations, recording height, hair and eye colour. These forms would have been filled out and updated during service, so contain a full service history.
