Thomas Cook archive partly catalogued
A selection of archives of pioneering travel company Thomas Cook have been catalogued by the Record O ce for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.
The firm collapsed in 2019, leading to concerns about the fate of its archives.
The documents were acquired by the record office, which has begun cataloguing them with the help of a £40,000 grant from the Archives Revealed programme.
Some of the records, including sta" magazines, contracts and agreements, and brochures can be searched via its online catalogue at record-office-catalogue.leics.gov.uk/CalmView. The search results include a description and date of each document, the names of any individuals mentioned, and whether it is open to access.
Project archivist Jennifer Roach said, “The Thomas Cook archive is internationally significant, as it provides a detailed historical record of the man and company who created international package travel as we know it today.”
Thomas Cook founded the company in 1872. He began by organising day trips for teetotal campaigners in Leicester.
Archives Revealed is a partnership between The National Archives, the Pilgrim Trust and the Wolfson Foundation supporting the cataloguing and unlocking of the UK’s archives.
