IRISH EMIGRATION DATABASE
‘Documenting Ireland: Parliament, People and Migration’ is part of a family of heritage websites that seek to document the experience of migrants to and from Ireland. The highlight from a research perspective might be the Irish Emigration Database, which traces its origins back to 1988 when a band of Enterprise Ulster trainees were put to work collecting and transcribing relevant material. Much of the data comes from newspapers, including advertisements for and reports on emigrant shipping, as well as births, deaths and marriages of those overseas. There’s also a host of personal material such as letters and diaries, all giving accounts of the migrant experience.
