In 1620 the Mayflower sailed across the Atlantic, carrying 102 passengers to America. Among the passengers was a group of religious separatists known as the Pilgrims, many of whom came from Nottinghamshire. The ‘Beyond the Mayflower’ exhibition, launched following the 400th anniversary of the voyage in 2020 and using the University of Nottingham’s archives, explores the Pilgrims’ background by tracing the history of religious dissent, power and faith in the county from the 17th century. It also looks at previous commemorations of the Mayflower story and the different ways in which it has been interpreted over time, in addition to wider issues of immigration, emigration and colonialism. The gallery is open 12pm–4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Free.
