THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES

This is the top-level guide to all things RAF at The National Archives (TNA) in Kew. It focuses on records of airmen and officers, mainly prior to 1939; later records are in the custody of the Ministry of Defence, although they are in the process of being transferred to TNA. You’ll find links to shorter guides on officers and airmen plus Royal Naval Air Service officers and ratings, as well as links to the records that are already available. These include combat reports, officers’ service records and the equivalent of War Diaries in the Army: Squadron Operations Record Books (ORBs) from series AIR 27. Indexed and searchable ORBs are available at TheGenealogist (see page 53).
