Jewish WW1 memorial database launched

-

A register of memorial boards containing the names of Jewish soldiers who were killed during the First World War has been published online at jewsfww.uk/memorial-boards.php. The register has been created by ‘We Were There Too’, a research project dedicated to the contributions of Britain’s Jewish communities during the war. It currently lists 29 memorial boards in cities including London, Bristol and Blackpool, and details of more boards will be added in the future.

The register can be searched by name, with about 1,000 names listed. Where available, the search results link to additional research into the soldier’s life that the project has carried out.

Senior project consultant Alan Fell explained that the database was introduced because many of the boards are made of wood and are deteriorating rapidly.

He added that interest in the project has been very positive, and details of new boards are “coming in fast and furious”.

If you have any information about any of the names who are featured on the register, please email contactus@ jewsfww.uk.
