1 OWNER

This column lists the owners of freehold land. Most of them are landlords of multiple houses, and their names are also linked to other properties elsewhere in the area.

2 STREET

The names of the two streets have been included to help with orderly recordkeeping in this densely packed and overcrowded inner-city parish.

3 OCCUPIERS

These are the occupiers of each individual property: they are all tenants – there are no owner-occupiers. Zachariah Goldring is Alan’s 3x great grandfather.

4 POTENTIAL TAX

The sums in this column indicate the sums that would have been due if the tax on the property had not already been redeemed previously.

5 VALUATION

The first two columns on each page list the valuation of each property in £, for those assessed (column one) and those that have been redeemed (column two).

6 TAX PAID

This column shows the land tax that was paid – by the tenant or, more rarely, the owner – in shillings and pence. Note that empty properties were also taxable.
