Robert’s service record showed that he had been discharged as a “lunatic”. We discovered more information about what happened in an article published in a local newspaper. On 28 September 1870 the Hampshire Telegraph reported that Robert had suddenly stabbed his friend and comrade William Elton, a colour sergeant.
