HOW TO SEARCH TNA’S ONLINE CATALOGUE

1Keep It Simple

Visit discovery.nationalarchives.gov. uk and click the ‘Advanced search’ link at the bottom of the search box. Complete the basic text fields to see how many results come in before adjusting your search parameters accordingly.

2Know The Department

All of the collections at TNA are organised by government department reference, eg ‘ADM’ for naval records created by the Admiralty. You can view an alphabetical list at discovery.national archives.gov.uk/browse.

Return to the ‘Advanced search’ page and add references to limit results to specific collections, eg ‘WO’ for the War Office and ‘AIR’ for the RAF. Click ‘Search’ and then refine by date to reduce results or select ‘Available for download only’.
