Totten and Ball strike to sink Surbiton 2nds

Captain McGonigle hopes there will be time to complete season

-

Lizzy Totten and Mel Ball both scored for the second successive week as Slough Ladies won 2-0 away to Surbiton 2nds on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

This time, however, it was Totten’s turn to convert a penalty corner and Ball to finish off a good team move.

Her eighth-minute conversion took Totten’s tally to four goals for the season, making her the joint highest scorer in Division One South.

Ball is on three following her goal two minutes into the second half.

She also earned her side’s player-of-the-match award.

The Pink ‘n’ Blacks had a couple more scoring opportunities and corners, but at the other end keeper Savarna Val had to make two very good saves to prevent the hosts getting back into the game.

“It was a good result for us,” said captain Kat McGonigle. “In previous games which we drew and also the loss to Trojans we felt were the better team. We were very pleased with the result as this also moves us up the table (to fifth) although there are very few points between most of the teams.”

The national lockdown has led to all of November’s England Hockey fixtures being called off, but McGonigle is hoping there will still be time to complete the season.

She stated: “There are four games to fit in and all being well there could be two played in early January and

another two at the end of March. Hopefully, we can start training again as a team in December.”

Slough Men picked up their second Premier Divison Two West point of the season when drawing 3-3 away to Oxford OBU. Kuli Matharu scored twice with Harj Sandhu getting the other

goal.

They remain bottom of the table, one point below PHC Chiswick, who have played a game less.

England Hockey has confirmed the national lockdown announced last Saturday will mean no club or community hockey until after December 4th at the earliest.

A South League spokesman said: “The committee will during this period consider and advise on the subsequent conduct of the league.”

MBBO fixtures could resume before Christmas as December 12 and 19 have already been set aside as spare dates, along with

March 27.
