A number of events which were due to take place in Windsor have been cancelled or postponed following the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II’s passing on Thursday, September 8 led to the cancellation of a number of festivities which were due to take place last weekend.

Football matches were cancelled, with Slough’s and Windsor’s fixtures postponed to a later date, whilst almost all council meetings were pulled with the exception of a corporate overview and scrutiny panel on Monday (see p14).

Planned industrial action by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers was called off during the mourning period, with strikes no longer set to go ahead out of respect for the Queen.

The Big Blue Bike Ride and the Windsor Memory Walk were postponed in the wake of the news, with the former postponed until 2023.

The organisers said all at Prostate Cancer UK are ‘deeply saddened’ by the Queen’ s passing and ‘join with many around the country to extend our heartfelt condolences to our patron the Duchess of Gloucester and the entire royal family’.

“Unfortunately, part of the route passes through the centre of Windsor and Windsor Castle which we expect to be closed for the next 10 days as people travel down to pay their respects and authorities prepare for the Queen to be laid to rest within St George’s Chapel,” organisers wrote.

“We have explored other options for the ride, but given the short notice we are unable to find a new route that does not compromise the safety and experience of our dedicated participants. Out of respect for the mood in Windsor, it no longer feels appropriate to hold a cycling event at this time.”

The Alzheimer’s Society’ s Memory Walk at Alexandra Gardens was also rescheduled to a closer date of October

2, with existing registrations and fundraising transferred to the new date.

The weekend of September 10-11 was also due to see the return of the Windsor Lions Cross Country Ride.

A statement on the Lions Club’s website said: “Following the very sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the protocol from the Great park authorities is to close down all movement in the Royal Parks for a period approaching two weeks out of respect for our monarchy.

“Therefore with a very heavy heart, we are cancelling the Windsor Lions

Cross Country Ride this coming weekend.

“We know you will be very disappointed as we are but we will send further information regarding your refunds and the associated process over the coming days.”

With the Queen’s funeral set to take place on Monday, Legoland Windsor Resort has announced its intention to close for the day, with the park’s hotels remaining closed on September 18/19.
