Harper’s brace helps the Blues reclaim first place

Burnham FC: Murray’s men on top of the table following Harefield United win

A brace from Rhys Harper (right) and a well-converted penalty by Oliver Bishop saw Burnham reclaim first place in the Combined Counties Premier Division North on Tuesday night.

The Blues knew they had to secure all three points against Harefield United if they were to take pole position once again, after Egham Town moved to the top with victory over London Lions and near rivals Flackwell Heath took second place following their win against Hilltop on Saturday.

And Ben Murray’s men got off to an ideal start, leading 1-0 at the break thanks to the prolific Rhys Harper. He then helped double the Blues’ advantage after the interval, taking his tally of goals scored this season to eight.

Oliver Bishop got himself on the scoresheet later in the game, confidently dispatching a penalty kick to make it 3-0 to Burnham, the final score.

First team coach Adam Barnard reflected: “It was a dogged performance from us against a team who have scored 10 in two games, so we are delighted to come away with three points and more importantly a clean sheet, limiting them to just a handful of opportunities in the first half.

“I don’t think we reached our optimum levels on Tuesday and maybe that was down to us not playing in 10 days, however there is a great togetherness with the group and sometimes that’s precisely what can get you through games.

“I do want to take the opportunity and say thank you to our supporters who travelled up on a Tuesday night, the players and staff appreciate it. “

On Harper’s display – the man currently fourth in the race for the golden boot – Barnard said: “Rhys has been excellent. He has worked extremely hard over the summer and has rightly got his just rewards, so we are delighted for him.

“The whole squad deserves a mention though as they have all played a huge part in the goals. We are showing we have the capability to ensure not one player carries the burden of scoring to win you the games, which is also important. “

Next up for Burnham is an encounter with Wembley at the 1878 Stadium.

“It’s another challenge we are looking forward to,” added Barnard.

“They will be looking to kick on after their win midweek but It’s important we focus on ourselves and put in a good performance.”
