Mark and Kevin overcome clubmates in county final
Several Desborough Bowls Club teams made it through to the Men’s Indoor County Finals at Green Lane, with Mark Essex and Kevin Scrace overcoming clubmates Colin Jones and Jeff Beal to win the pairs event.
That win was followed by another for Desborough’s John McGuinnes who got the better of Barry Williams of West Berkshire to take the singles title.
Desborough’s women sent a team to the
BWIBA Top Club competition and emerged triumphant over Whiteknights and West Berks. Desborough’s ladies won the event with 16 points, pipping Whiteknights on 14 points with West Berks third with six points.
The team included Angie Isaac, Gina Braddock, Sally Lane, Rose Turner, Tonie Philpott, Gill O’Neill, Pauline Tuttle, Tina Scherer, Jacinta Monteiro, Teresa Slark, Linda Harvey and Nicola Jones.
Desborough’s Steve McAlister progressed to the latter stages of the National Finals in Nottingham in the Over 60s Singles event.
He managed to beat George Draper from Lincoln in the round of 16 and John Robinson from Melton in the quarterfinals before succumbing to the eventual champion, Clifford Holmes from Hornsea, in the semi-finals.
Desborough were represented by Jacinta Monteiro, Teresa Slark and Nicola Jones in the National Championships in Nottingham.
Competing in the Ladies Over 50s Triples, they made it to the last 16 of the competition before going down by 10 shots to Charnwood IBC from Loughborough (12-22). Slightly closer to home, Desborough travelled to Worthing to take on
Adur IBC in a six-rink friendly but went down by 46 shots in a 135-89 defeat last month.
The rinks skipped by Dave Perriman and Dave Webster both narrowly lost, handing top rink honours to Trish
Skinner, Peter Colton, Iain Bond and Brian Wright who won 24 – 14.
Nicola Jones, Jenny
Morgan, Keith Roper and Mark Essex also recently represented Desborough in the London & Southern Counties Bowling Association Mixed Fours final.
They started brightly against Grattons, but their opponents gradually got to grips with them and fought back to beat the Maidenhead team by one shot (13-14).
Desborough’s ladies also emulated their male counterparts by recently winning a Bannerette against the County Ladies by six shots (9387). The foundation for their victory came from two winning triples. The one skipped by Linda Harvey returning a winning scorecard, but they were pipped to top rink honours by Trish Skinner, Jackie Sandal and Helen Payne who won by 23 shots, 29 – 6.
Desborough welcomed Royal Household to Green Lane for a sevenrink friendly last month and went down by two shots after an intense tussle (139-141).
Michael White skipped his team to a 14-shot win, but they had to play second fiddle to Janice Gibbs, Don Isaacs, Gill Konrad and John Munnelly who won by 19 shots, 31 -12.
