Anger grows on road safety as traffic lights remain off
People visiting the £23million Houldsworth Centre on Kenilworth Avenue are fed up trying to cross at the pedestrian crossing without the aid of traffic lights.
The lights at the Houldsworth Centre have yet to be switched on, resulting in residents fearing for their safety as they try to cross the road.
Margaret Weir, who regularly attends the Centre, said:“I don’t know why the lights haven’t been turned on yet.
“They have even still got the hoods on them.
“Cars come flying up the road and it feels really dangerous when you’re trying to cross.”
The Houldsworth Centre has been plagued with problems since first opening in August of last year. They include delays to the car park being finished, elevators breaking down and even claims of children climbing balconies which have combined to leave people unimpressed with the new facility.
Margaret said;“It’s one thing after another at the centre – and it’s not safe to cross at the pedestrian crossing.”

“I’d like to thank all of the people from each of the organisations and from the wider community who helped get this issue resolved.
“Best part is that when we run another fundraising coffee morning for the Food Bank in October, we will be able to put a poster publicising the event into the Houldsworth Centre.”
Joe Dowds, NHS Lanarkshire capital services manager, said: design business manager with North Lanarkshire Council said;“The pedestrian crossing is not currently in use due to visibility issues.
“A number of signs are partially blocking the primary signal head, and mature trees require to be cut back.
“Both could compromise road safety as drivers may miss the red light, particularly as this is a newly located crossing point.
“We will only switch the crossing back on when these safety works are complete.
We’ve instructed our contractor to carry out the works as soon as possible. We apologise for this inconvenience, however we will not risk public safety.”
