Vivian takes UK top spot
S2 pupil Vivian Duruh won a gold medal in the shot put at the Scottish National Championships on August 15.
Vivian was competing in the under-13 category and threw a mighty 10.87 metres to win the event and set a UK best for her age group
The throw sees Vivian ranked at number one in the UK, a real achievement for a young person who only took up athletics in 2014.
This builds on Vivian’s great achievement at the North Lanarkshire school championships, where she broke the javelin record twice during the competition.
Miss Louise Cairns of the PE department said: “When Vivian was throwing the other competitors were amazed by the power and distance of her efforts.”
Vivian put her success down to her training with Law and District Amateur Athletic Club up to three times a week.
She said: “Don, my coach, really encouraged me and the training sessions give me the determination and confidence to get over my nerves. I feel able to do the things that people tell me I am capable of.”
Mrs Aileen Smith of the PE department said: “I am delighted to see Vivian achieve at such a high-level event.
“She is a talented and committed young athlete and the department would like to wish her every success as she goes forward with her sport.”
