Shotts and District Rotary Club meetings are every Wednesday at 7pm in the Station Hotel. The visit from Dorothy Russell, chaplain of Shotts Prison and Claudius England, a Jamaican singer/songwriter was very successful. They explained the sort of work they do in Scottish prisons and they plan to visit many more over the next month or so. Claudius showed how he tries to communicat­e with the prisoners and others through music and he entertaine­d the Rotary with a sample of his songs. On September 5, the club meet in Peebles at 6.30pm for the first round of the inter district Rotary quiz. For further informatio­n, contact the club secretary, David McCloy on 0796120487­1 or email davidmcclo­ysnr@hotmail.com. 1st Shotts Company Girls’ Brigade Girls looking for something to do on a Wednesday night are welcome to join in for some fun and friendship. The Girls’ Brigade is all about making new friends, discoverin­g new things and, above all, having fun. The girls enjoy lots of different activities from crafts and competitio­ns, to drama and displays. There are also opportunit­ies for them to widen their horizons by learning new skills, gaining awards and making a difference in their local community. The youngest members are the Explorers for girls in P1-3, who meet from 6pm to 7.30pm. Girls in P4-7 are old enough to join the Junior section, who meet from 6pm to 7.30pm and P6-7 girls come along at 6pm to 8pm. Juniors take on new challenges all the time through a range of different activities, working towards gaining badges. They are also able to demonstrat­e how much they’ve learned through displays and competitio­ns. Girls will be able to visit different places throughout Scotland on day trips and sometimes for a weekend. The Brigaders are the oldest girls in the company and any girls at secondary school can come along on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm. The Brigaders take on more challengin­g work but there’s also lots of adventure involved. They are able to take part in outdoor pursuits and adventure sports and might even be able to go on a Brigade holiday or activity weekend. They can also work towards the Queen’s Award and various levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme, which will help them grow in confidence and develop new skills for the future. Members old and new meet at Calderhead Erskine church hall every Wednesday night. EU Congregati­onal Church On Saturday morning, the men’s breakfast is at 9am. On Sunday, the morning service is at 11.30am. On Tuesday night, the singing group is at 7pm. Lodge St John 471 meetings have now finished until September 9. There is a general committee meeting on September 5, at 7pm. Bon Accord Club The club are taking new bookings, so please get in touch if you’d like to hold an event there. There is bingo every Wednesday and Friday evenings and a cabaret every Saturday night in the lounge. The function hall is available to hire for events. For more informatio­n, contact the club on 01501 821542. Salvation Army Corps On Tuesday, the friendship club is from 1pm to 3pm. The youth club is on each Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm. Please note that there will be no band practice tonight after the youth club. On Thursday morning, the toddlers group is from 9.30am to 11.30am.
