McGinnis returns to fresh challenge Kickboxing champ makes move to boxing

- Michael Temlett

Jamie “Ginnie” McGinnis is ready to put three years of hurt behind him and become a boxing star.

The New Stevenson man has signed for MGM Scotland as he makes the switch from world kickboxing champion to boxing.

McGinnis put pen to paper on a deal last week which will see him team up with MGM promoter Sam Kynoch.

The 32-year-old has had three years out of action after he snapped his cruciate in a kickboxing world title fight.

He believes the time is right to step back into the ring and can’t wait for his journey to start with boxing.

McGinnis said: “I snapped my cruciate in the second round of the fight but I kept going and finished the fight.

“I woke up in the hospital bed with the title belt and I was still focussed on coming back.

“But six months later I tried to come back and ruptured it again.

“Since then I’ve set up Elite Kickboxing and Fitness Gym which has helped me stay fit as well as give the kids something to do.

“It’s been great to be able to help them out and we’ve had a good few going to tournaments and doing well.

“But because I left kickboxing when I did I still felt like I had a lot to give.

“That’s why it was always tough to watch the guys who were coming into the gym and training away.

“It could be heartbreaking at times but for this to come around is brilliant and I can’t wait for the first fight.”

McGinnis will compete as a flyweight and is hoping to get his first fight in October or November.

However, he believes his three year deal with MGM has given him a new lease of life.

He said: “A lot of Sam’s boxers have came in and sparred with me in recent times and I’ve known him for quite some time.

“When I was given this opportunity I had to take it and it made sense for me to go back into it.

“I’ve been getting myself fit and making sure I’m sharp so hopefully I can get out and fight soon.

“Hopefully we’ll get a first fight in a couple of months time.

MGM promoter Sam Kynoch said: “I have known Ginnie for several years and he has sparred with boxers I have trained over that time. Ginnie trains very hard and will take it to a new level as a professional boxer. I look forward to working with him.”
