Opening day defeat for Utd

-

Lanark United ....... 4 Newmains United . 1 Newmains United opened their league campaign with a disappointing defeat at Moor Park in Lanark on Saturday.

Kevin Muirhead’s men are still looking for their first competitive win of the season, and had hoped to put a lackluster Sectional League Cup campaign behind them.

Lanark had the better chances in a fairly one sided first half, but new signing Zander White’s introduction to the back four steadied a Newmains defence which was, at times, all-at-sea.

Gareth Hallford produced some fine saves for the visitors but was helpless in the 38th minute when Murphy scored from close range.

Newmains levelled the score six minutes after the restart, when Jay Burns put David O’Donnell through on goal and he made no mistake, netting his second of the season.

Ten minutes later, Lanark regained the lead when a free-kick on the edge of the box took a wicked deflection leaving Hallford helpless in the Newmains goal.

This seemed to take the wind out of Newmains sails and Lanark went further in front four minutes later, and a fourth was struck home eight minutes from the end to complete the scoring.

St Anthony’s return to Victoria Park for the first time in 14 years on Saturday in a Central District Second match with a 2pm kick-off.
