Drug dealers and antisocial yobs are booted out homes

- Ross Thomson

Two council tenants have been evicted from their homes in Newmains and Gowkthrapple due to drug dealing and antisocial behaviour.

The yobs booted out of their council homes made up one third of the overall total across North Lanarkshire who lost their tenancy.

Both were turfed out for drug dealing and antisocial behaviour.

Superintendent John McTear, Lanarkshire Division, Police Scotland, added: “We know that in reality, anyone can become a victim of antisocial behaviour regardless of age, beliefs, health considerations, lifestyle and backgrounds.

“Quite often the most vulnerable members of our communities are targeted and this is why, here in Lanarkshire we are committed to partnership working.

“We will carry out robust investigations of any reports we receive and will continue to work closely with our Community Safety partners, to keep people safe.

“I would urge anyone who is experiencing any form of antisocial behaviour to report it.”

The number of complaints dealt with by the council’s antisocial behaviour team fell by 967 during the past 12 months.

The service received 7484 complaints, with domestic noise continuing to be the biggest source of calls (69 per cent).

During the past year, police officers issued almost 1000 warnings, as well as 53 Notice of Proceedings for antisocial behaviour against North Lanarkshire Council tenants.

Councillor Barry McCulloch, convener of housing, said: “It’s now two years since we introduced our new, more responsive antisocial service.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to improving this we regularly survey those who have contacted us.

“Over 95 per cent of those surveyed told us they were satisfied with the service they received.

“We would urge residents experiencing ant i s o c i a l behaviour to contact us and let us help to try and resolve the issues. We want to improve communities and will continue to work closely with our partners to make a positive difference to the lives of our residents.”

Last week the Wishaw Press reported how five teenage gangleaders behind a reign of violent terror in the Maxton Crescent area of Coltness were charged by police with antisocial behaviour offences. A gang of 20 youths were accused of violent assaults, street drinking, lighting fires in woods, throwing stones at buses and shoplifting from Tesco Express and vandalism.

Anyone who wants to report antisocial behaviour can visit the council’s wesbite or call the 24- hour number on 0300 123 1382.
