Newmains Community Trust’s chairman John Harper paid a glowing tribute to his predecessor during the group’s recent AGM.

John praised the work of Robert Arthur who was NCT chairman from the group’s inception in 2011 until May of this year before stepping down because of work commitments.

During that time funding was secured to build the new NCT Centre which was officially opened in November last year.

John said: “Lack of availability due to work commitments meant that Robert was unable to continue as chairman, but a huge debt of gratitude is due to him for having the vision, along with the other directors and volunteers, and for getting the NCT Centre off the ground.

“Other directors who have moved on are Lynn Henderson, Liz Gold, Robert Muldoon and Robert Crawford but equally we welcome Tracey Stone, Cynthia Mowat, Ian Fleming and Phyllis Butler, to join Stuart Bryson, Cheryl Osborne, Pauline Davidson, Mary Gilfillan and myself.

“It’s good to have a gentle turnover of people since it brings fresh perspectives to the centre.

“All the directors have put in hundreds of hours of totally unpaid work to bring the project forward.”

John also thanked the work of the centre’s volunteers and NCT manager Lynn Sirrell for their hard work.

He also pointed to the number of local groups who are using the centre including Newmains Brass Band, a weekly food co-op, carer group sessions and line dancing classes.

John added: “The NCT Centre could not run without the continued support of a wide range of people from a wide range of sources including individuals, local businesses, North Lanarkshire Council and its many sections and representatives, funding bodies, and most importantly the local communities.

““The board would like to express their continued appreciation of the centre manager Lynn Sirrell and her staff, and the many volunteers for their contribution to the work of the charity and for their huge support during the year.

“Despite its good location and green spaces, Newmains has in the past suffered from vandalism, graffiti, antisocial behaviour on the streets, litter, poorly maintained outdoor spaces. and a lack of local landmarks.

“Our priority is to turn Newmains around and make it a safe and attractive place to live and visit, beginning at the NCT Centre and working outwards to the wider local communities.”
