McGuinness keen to keep up momentum

2- 1 last weekend. Now with two cup clashes coming in the next fortnight, McGuinness admits it has put him in a tricky spot.

He said: “If you had offered me a cup game two or three weeks ago, I would have chopped your hand off for it because we needed a distraction.

“But now we’ve got a couple of wins in a row I just wanted to play again.

“I wish we were playing again tomorrow because everyone was buzzing after Saturday because we played so well.

“We can use the two cup games as a good distraction but it leaves me with a bit of a dilemma because I’m unsure whether to go with the same team and keep the momentum going or give the guys who are on the fringes of the squad a chance.

“The positive thing is that we’re heading in the right direction and wins against Maryhill and Rutherglen will be huge for us to go and kick on.

“It could well be a big six points come the end of the season.”

McGuinness admits that whilst a change in approach from Shotts over the past couple of weeks may be the reason the team have found their stride, he is under no illusions about this Saturday’s West of Scotland cup tie away to Saltcoats Victoria.

He said: “Myself and the coaching staff sat down a couple of weeks ago and we looked at how we could try and turn our luck around. We had been playing well but weren’t getting the results we deserved.

“We’ve changed our approach slightly and instead of a slow build-up using our good passing game we’ve decided to be a bit more direct and use our pace.

“We can still get the ball down and play because that’s the way we like to play football but we need to build a run of results first to build confidence.

“This Saturday will be a tough one because Saltcoats are a good side but we want to show that we can hold our own with these sides.”
