Gormley is on cloud nine after super start

- Murray Spooner

Wishaw footballer Liam Gormley has hit the ground running at his new club by scoring nine goals in two games.

The former Celtic youth put pen to paper on a deal with Cambuslang Rangers last week and netted five times in a dream debut against Forth Wanderers.

However, things got even better for the 23- year- old on Saturday as he scored another four against Johnstone Burgh.

Now the Wishaw striker wants to win promotion from the Central District First – the same league as his local side Wishaw Juniors.

Gormley rose to prominence with the Celtic youth side after scoring the winning goal in the 2011 Youth Cup Final to beat Rangers in extra time.

Since then, Gormley has had a turbulent time, playing for Lowland League side East Kilbride FC last season as well as spells with Morton, Queen’s Park and East Fife.

He said: “When you’re playing senior you don’t want to move down to junior but what I’ve found, with my time at Cambuslang, is that the gulf between the leagues is not that big. It was day which all of those inside Fir Park will never forget.

Thirty-five years ago, one of the most iconic footballers ever to play the game turned out against Motherwell in a friendly while at San Jose Earthquakes.

Now the Wishaw Press open up the archives to show the memorable day that George Best came to town.

“Over the past few years it hasn’t worked out for whatever reason and I felt I needed to drop down to get back, get my name out there again and start enjoying my football and the club were keen to help me do that.

“I know I’ll always score goals but I just needed to find a level I could consistently do it at.

“I’d love to score five goals every week but I would be happy with one and getting the three points. At the end of the day as long as the team wins that’s all that matters.”

Cambuslang Rangers enjoyed promotion from Central District Second last year and have started off this campaign in fine form – winning five out of six. Now Gormley is looking to build on the success after his nine-goal start.

He said:“Having just got promotion the team was obviously looking to stay in the league but I don’t see why we can’t get promoted again after the run we’ve been on and some of the teams we’ve been playing. Back-to-back promotion would be a great achievement.”
